Using IMDb and Netflix, I am constantly mining for potentially great movies. I struck gold with The Defiant Ones.Two convicts, one white, one black, chained together escape when the truck escorting them runs off the road and wrecks. Self-preservation forces them to look out for the other guy.
Nominated for nine Academy Awards, this movie was ahead of its time in dealing with race relations and, to a lesser extent, the treatment of criminals. It could have easily failed or been merely average, but with Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier as the convicts, it soars to unforgettable.
